Young Tony Zitta’s life has been cut short by an unidentified reckless driver in Abuja.
The youth corps member was driving home on the morning of July 29 when his car was hit by another vehicle, a BMW 325 CI, Diamond bank junction, Wuse II, along Ademola Adetokumbo.
Zitta, said to be one of the founding members of The Capital Movement, reportedly suffered brain injury as a result of the collision.
According to TCM, witnesses say police officers who were first to get to the scene of the accident looted Zitta’s vehicle – allegedly taking his money. They were also alleged to have helped the driver of the BMW vehicle escape by clearing his valuables from the car, as well as removing his license plate.
“Some ladies at the scene however came and intervened as the first policemen tried to steal his items, successfully saving his computer and camera,” TCM alleges.
“As the ladies created a commotion, other people came and made sure the second group of responders carried the BMW and Tony’s camry to the police station, as some friends of the BMW owner had sent a tow truck to try and move the BMW away from the crime scene.”
Zitta was rushed to Garki hospital, but was reportedly rejected on grounds that he couldn’t be treated of a brain injury at the hospital. He was reportedly referred to Wuse General Hospital after a CT scan. At Wuse General Hospital, his rescuers were allegedly told there was no space.
“He was referred to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital an hour away,” TCM said. “They claimed they drained his head of blood & he was stabilizing. The family & friends brought several doctors & neurosurgeons to see him but the hospital didn’t allow, claiming he was ok.”
Zitta died a day later, on Monday July 30.
The driver of the vehicle that allegedly hit Zitta remains at large, and his group are calling for justice.
“There are so many conversations that should be had concerning the death of Tony Zitta and we all need to make sure his death wasn’t in vain. Because at the end of the day it was not only the accident that killed him but the system,” Zitta’s TCM members said.
“Tony was the heart and soul of the movement & the thought of going on without him is unbearable.”
